About the Tour and Archaeological Sites
Just under 2 hours away, departing from either Chetumal or Bacalar, there are 3 extremely interesting archaeological sites. In order of proximity, we will visit Xpujil, Becán, and Chicanná, providing an excellent alternative to discover the peculiar architectural features of the Maya culture in a very accessible way.
1. Xpujil (“Cat’s Tail” in Maya): Named after a native plant of the region, the site is located just steps away from the federal highway (you need to pay attention as they are not directly in sight). Three buildings are visited, the last one being the most interesting because it is a temple almost at ground level, unlike most common Maya palaces.
2. Becán: An ancient Maya city located 8 km past the town of Xpujil towards Calakmul. The city featured 7 entrances simulating the 7 orifices of a human head (ears, nostrils, eyes, and mouth), large temples belonging to the ancient Maya elite, and a trench for water collection. A small Maya ballgame court can also be appreciated here.
3. Chicanná (“At the House of the Snake Mouth”): A truly extraordinary site due to its highly elaborated Río Bec-style architecture. It offers a short tour, but for many visitors, it turns out to be one of the most interesting.
